Nils Arne Pedersen - New Light on the Origins of the Legend of Addai


The origins of the famous legend about Addai and King Abgar of Edessa have been much disputed in modern scholarship. It has now become possible to reconsider these origins because the recently edited Codex Tchacos contains a version of the First Apocalypse of James, in which not only Addai is mentioned but also Manael, a personal name otherwise only known from the Syriac version of Acts.
