This paper examines an aspect of Hilary's theology that has been all
but ignored: his emphasis on the full humanity of the incarnate Christ
as the means whereby humankind attains the glory originally planned for
it. Through this he suggests that the two phrases commonly known as the
‘exchange formula'- the ‘unassumed is the unhealed' and ‘God became man
so man could become God'- are not interchangeable but sequential.
