This short communication will (1) explore the treatment of certain
texts and types found embarassing or mysterious by early Christian
exegetes, and (2) will consider the Quaestiones tradition and the
kind of questions posed to the biblical texts. These examples of
'riddles and puzzles' will stimulate reconsideration of their purpose
within scriptural revelation as perceived by Origen in De Principiis and Augustine in De Doctrina.
