Dionysios the Areopagite develops an elaborate doctrine of like and unlike symbolism mostly in connexion with his teaching on the celestial beings (‘angels’, though for Dionysios ‘angel’ is the title of the lowest rank of the celestial beings). This paper will explore the background of his theory of symbolism in Neoplatonism, especially in Proklos, and outline its development in St Maximos the Confessor.
