This study considers the hermeneutical processes of Chromatius
and his resulting use of Scripture in preaching. Ministering in a time
of great change (388-407) in a significant Roman trade city, Chromatius'
offers a fascinating window of how a learned scholar utilized Scripture
to encourage change in the lives of those in his hearing. His tractates
provide valuable insight into how he interpreted Scripture, while his
homilies reveal a vibrant and creative relevancy. His fascination with
the mysteries of the Trinity and Incarnation invite his community to
participate through their lives in illuminating the darkness of their
present age.
In today's world where homiletics is trending towards distancing itself from focused exegesis for the sake of cultural relevance, Chromatius provides a challenging and helpful example of how hermeneutics and homiletics might function together in an unsettling time of cultural transition.
