This paper will explore the parallels to the doctrine of deification in
Jerome and will focus on the complementary terms he prefers: participation in
divine life, grace and its special gifts (in particular virginity), and adoptive
sonship. Attention will be also paid to Jerome's adaptation of the themes
characteristic of the Western tradition, such as the inequality of divine gifts,
the role of human agency, and divine foreknowledge.
