Satoshi Toda: Damascus in ancient Christianity

The importance of the city of Damascus for the history of Christianity at large cannot be sufficiently stressed, in the sense that there Saul, later the apostle Paul, was converted to Christianity. And in this context, there is an interesting but largely neglected discussion made by Jean Daniélou concerning a possible role of this ancient city. This paper will touch on these subjects. On the other hand, it seems that, except for these, the name of the city is rarely mentioned in the history of ancient Christianity down to the Arab conquest in the seventh century. What do we know about Damascus with reference to the history of ancient Christianity? This paper also intends to make a survey of available sources related to this ancient city.
