Tiphaine Lorieux: Looking for the authentic author of the pseudo-Theodoreti Commentarius in Oseam

This short communication aims to present the Commentary on Hosea by pseudo-Theodoret of Cyrus. This text, conveyed by six manuscripts, (the oldest being the Vaticanus Palatinus graecus, 13th century) has not been edited yet. Although it is clear that this commentary on the biblical book of the prophet Hosea is not the Commentary on Hosea by Theodoret of Cyrus, it shows striking exegetic similiraties to it, as well as to the Commentary on Hosea by Theodore of Mopsuestia. Both Antiochian commentaries could have been sources for the Commentary by pseudo-Theodoret and their connections have to be discussed in order to contextualise the text in the history of exegesis. More broadly, my presentation will have for purpose to characterise as precisely as possible the interpretative content of this biblical commentary. Moreover, I will suggest a possible author to this text, by showing that the exegetic fragments on Hosea attributed to Gennadius of Constantinople (5th century) by the Catena II on the Minor Prophets can all be found, word by word or in an extended version, in the Commentary by pseudo-Theodoret. I will therefore examine if the exegesis read in this commentary are consistent with other works of Gennadius. Finally, a last question will remain : why this Commentary, if to be considered the work of Gennadius of Constantinople, has been transmitted under the name of Theodoret of Cyrus ?
