Joost Van Rossum: Gregory of Nyssa's Exegesis of the "Heavenly Bread": A "Non-Eucharistic " Interpretation?

One does not find a direct reference to the Eucharist in Gregory of Nyssa’s commentaries on the episode of the Manna in Exodus and its related texts in chapter 6 of the Gospel of John. The reason must be that he was obviously influenced by the Alexandrian exegesis of Origen and Philo, which was based on the theme of “Wisdom as nourishment” in early Jewish literature, which finally goes back to the Old Testament itself. But perhaps it is possible to find some allusions to the Eucharist in these texts of Gregory?A comparison with modern exegesis of John 6 will be included in our presentation.
