Carlos Marcelo Singh Mesconi: Diadochus of Photike and the discernent of spirits

The "doctrine of the discernment of the spirits" in Diadochus de Photike is a complex and transcendent concept. First, "complex", because it is understood in the interaction of different levels: theological, moral; and of different human capacities: reason, will, the senses. It is also "transcendent", since it occupies a transversal place in the work of the author, especially in the Hundred Gnostic Chapters. Transcendent because of its importance in the system of thought and its influence on the later mysticism. The discernment presented as a theory implies from its very conception a contemplative attitude, a humility disposition in front of the Trinity. After this conviction that can be seen with insistence on Diadochus, the concept of struggle is also highlighted, which warns of the difficulty, tension and commitment required by the act of discernment. The fighters are not alone, grace sustains them, consolation and pedagogical desolation are forging their path of progress towards perfection. Experiences that, prompted by the Holy Spirit, manifest their constant presence, and their dynamic quality, guiding and igniting discernment, so it is pertinent to emphasize that the pneumatological aspect is determinant in their understanding and experience.
