Since the magisterial work of W. H. C. Frend, no single author has provided a complete overview of the movement, but various articles have appeared rehearsing old interpretations and providing some new ones. The purpose of this paper is to chart emerging trends and to propose a new focus for the investigation of Donatists, mediating between political and religious approaches by contextualizing changes in Donatist sacramental theology between the origins of the schism and Augustine's day.
