jan van pottelberge: CLEMENT OF ALEXANDRIA and CELSUS' ON THE TRUE DOCTRINE

Clement never mentions Celsus and perhaps had never read or even heard of his
work. Yet there are several points where Clement may have had either Celsus or some
comparable critic in mind." (Chadwick 1966)

Can we find in the Stromateis of Clement of Alexandria and in his Protreticus respon-
ses to the attack on the Christians in the Alethes Logos ?
Or is it more appropriate to posit that he was trying to respond to the challenges of
in such a way that he lifted the debate to a higher level ?
