Introductions to the Shepherd of Hermas seldom fail to mention that this text was considered scripture by early Patristic authors such as Clement of Alexandria (Strom. 1.17.29, 2.1.9 12), Irenaeus (Haer. 2.20.2), or Tertullian (Or. 16), yet a full analysis of the function of the vocabulary used to designate scripture in these authors is lacking. This paper focuses on Clement and attempts to clarify what we can make about his high regard of Hermas, by looking at how the Alexandrine speaks of authoritative text in general and of the Shepherd in particular.
