Majella Franzmann: Mariam, the net-caster: the development of a Manichaean tradition about Mary Magdalene

The paper investigates two related passages of the Manichaean Psalm Book (187.2-37 and 192.21-22), which reinterpret and extend the New Testament tradition in John 20:11-18 in which Mary Magdalene is given the command to carry information from the risen Jesus to the disciples. The Manichaean story develops a greater role for Mary, who becomes a second revelatory Jesus-figure (Sophia), the net-caster and fisher of men, and who is also the source of the true call to mission/apostleship of the Eleven.
