In his Homily 21 on Luke, Origen examined the text “Prepare a way for the Lord” and maintains that this “way” is within the human heart. But can the heart contain such a way? Origen asserted that we have in our memory whatever cities we have visited, and “we encompass the sea.”
Since in Origen’s understanding all tangible reality is a shadow or image of spiritual realities, I shall ask: in what sense did Origen believe that memory “contained” the landscape of the world?
