Hilary Mooney: Patristic perspectives on Philippians 3:12

This paper investigates the way in which patristic authors interpret the Pauline text
Philippians, chapter three, verses ten to fourteen. Research on commentaries
from the hand of fourth century authors provides the mainstay of the
argumentation. Their theological handling of verse twelve is central to the
paper. The complexity of the patristic roots of a theory of inhering in Christ is unearthed and the
various strands of interpretation are analysed. Both the individual alignment to the pattern of Christ’s choices and the gift of participation in his fate in
dying and being raised receive attention.
