Mark Sheridan: Homer Hints and So Does Moses: The Verb ai¦ni¢ttomai in Early Christian Exegesis

This paper explores the use of the verb ai¦ni¢ttomai in patristic exegesis. It has been argued that this verb belongs to the earliest form of non-literal interpretation of Homer and it is found in the later manuals of Homeric interpretation (Heraclitus and Ps. Plutarch). It is used extensively by the Alexandrians: Philo, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Eusebius, Didymus, but also by the Antiochenes: Diodore, Chrysostom, Theodore and Theodoret. Particular attention will be given to the Antiochene usage. The later distinction between allegoria and typos should not obscure the common exegetical heritage.
