The documents related to the Council of Ephesus I (431 C.E. ) suggest that the gathered bishops did not engage in examinations and discussions about the faith, as requested by the emperor. A close reading of the homilies included in many of the collections of conciliar documents show how some bishops presented their own view on important theological details to the Council. The paper focuses on the sermons of Theodotus of Ancyra. He praised Cyril's leadership at the same time that he exhorted the bishops to follow his Christology, which had significant differences to Cyril's.
