Blossom Stefaniw: Origen is not normal

The portrayal of Origen as a deviant interpreter is part of 4th and 5th century efforts at establishing a totalized form of religion linked to a disambiguated notion of the meaning of sacred texts. Origenist reading was portrayed as dangerous, abnormal, and corrupt by practitioners of a discourse which shows strong conceptual analogies to the discourse of heteronormativity. By examining both official and inofficial statements condemning Origen, this paper focuses on articulating what aspects of Origenist textuality in particular were seen as a threat and how  hostility towards him and his followers reflects larger movements of religious change.
