Arnaud PERROT: Discerning spuria and dubia in Basil’s corpus according to Julien Garnier.

The edition of Basil’s works by the 18th century Maurists has played a major role in our perception of the limits of Basil’s Corpus. Many texts transmitted by the Greek manuscripts, some of which had not aroused the slightest suspicion until the Benedictine edition, were at that time considered as ‘dubia and spuria’. Therefore, the texts condemned as dubious ones in the 18th century have been systematically less read and less exploited, or even ignored, by the specialists of Basil’s work until our days.This may have had some impact on our understanding of Basil. In this paper, I will focus (in order to understand and discuss them) on the criteria used by the Benedictine scholar Julien Garnier to identify and exclude suspicious texts.
