Sebastiano Panteghini: Presentation of the project “Critical digital edition of the Expositiones in Psalmos of (Ps.-)Athanasius of Alexandria”
The Expositiones are a commentary on the Book of Psalms in the tradition of the Alexandrian interpretation of the Bible (it is a kind of compendium). The original Greek version, not handed down directly, must be reconstructed using the excerpts that are found in the catenas on the Psalms. In addition, there are translations into Syriac, Coptic, Arabic, and Georgian. The authorship of Athanasius, who wrote no commentary on any other Bible book, has been disputed in recent decades. The project presented here (led by Prof. Uta Heil, Institute of Church History at the Faculty of Protestant Theology of the University of Vienna) will be realized in cooperation with the research group “The Late Antique Biblical Exegesis of Alexandria and Antioch” (headed by Prof.ChristophMarkschies) of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. Its aim is to reconstruct the first part of the commentary (Psalms 1–75) in order to replace the unsuitable edition ofMontfaucon– Migne(PG 27) both with an online publication on the project's website and a printed version for the series Athanasius Werke (AW 4, Exegetica). Also, the oriental translations shall be taken into account in a specific critical apparatus. This undertaking will thus carry out pioneering work with regard to the assessment of pseudepigraphy in the context of the writings of Athanasius and provide an important contribution to the study of Greek catenas.
