I am particularly interested to know where in the De Providentia do you or does Marin say that Prosper defends the notion that human will sometimes precedes grace? How did the reviewer not notice that apart from Marin's ludicrous suggestion that the decade of war would be an allusion to the Trojan war, his arguments dismissing Hincmar's identification of Prosper as the poem's author and hypothesis that it was smuggled into the and transmitted in the Prosperian corpus by antiaugustinian monks to be specious and utterly self-serving? Already Hadot in his Commentary on Victorinus’ work noticed Gnostic themes and motives. Tardieu, following Hadot’s intuition, shows that both Victorinus and the Coptic-Gnostic Text “Zostrianos” follow one and the same philosophical source. Other scholars (C.O.Moreschini, L. Abramowski) have recently claimed that Victorinus has access (unbewust?!) to Gnostic texts. Well, a very intrigued topic. May I have a copy of your contribution?!
Cordialement,
Dominique PoirelDominique Poirelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05714119351283313418noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4691107643479417770.post-55200368422437560652015-06-27T04:52:56.332-07:002015-06-27T04:52:56.332-07:00Levan, you are one of the best theology, how I kno...Levan, you are one of the best theology, how I know...Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17487805777887983506noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4691107643479417770.post-13097915781670239572015-03-04T02:57:05.715-08:002015-03-04T02:57:05.715-08:00It’s great that your party members have selected p...It’s great that your party members have selected proper meeting rooms for your November annual meeting. In 2008 I had my Ph.D. in Florence at S.I.S.M.E.L. (www.sismelfirenze.it) and I study martyrial hagiography of the early Middle Ages. In particular, I take part to a project of a two-volume publication about Aquileian hagiography directed by prof. Emanuela Colombi (University of Udine). For the first volume, edited in 2008 (the second one is due to be published in spring 2013) I worked on the Passio Donati, underlining its connections with the Passio Pollionis, while I was making the critical edition of the text of Passio Donati. These studies brought me to conclude that the idea of the translation of Donatus' relics in early 5th century was wrong (there is an homonymy between two different Donatus in Aquileian tradition), and also that Passio Donati was written in the early XII century, being a re-writing of the Passio Pollionis in a very specific context, as I tried to demonstrate in my edition. I am still studying Pannonian hagiography, because of the strict connections with Aquileia's hagiographical literature. That's why I would really like to read the paper mentioned in this post, if You can send me it. I can also send You a copy of my work. Thank You very much, best regards,

Marianna Cerno
linfalice@gmail.comMellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02267186314385496811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4691107643479417770.post-48110295429316963852012-08-28T23:34:20.714-07:002012-08-28T23:34:20.714-07:00You made some decent points there.I would like to ...You made some decent points there.I would like to thank you for the efforts you have put in writing this web site. Frend, Martyrdom and Persecution in the Early Church (NY: Anchor 1967)p.325 speaks of "the anti-Origenist Christology of Paul of Samosata".

In Jean Danielou-Henri Marrou, The Christian Centuries, The First Six Hundred Years (NY: McGraw-Hill 1964) p.217 we read "He (Paul of Samosata) condemned hymns in honor of Christ as an innovation, and attacked Origen (HE,VII,30,9). His nomination (as bishop) evidently aroused opposition in the more Hellenized circles of Antioch, influenced by Greek philosophy. The leaders of this group were Lucian and Malchion. The attacks of Paul's theology led to the convocation of a Synod, which the whole crowd of Origenists attended.

In F. Cayre, Manual of Patrology (Tournai Belgium: Desclee, 1940) p.176 Cayre says that Friedrich Loofs tries to rehabilitate Paul of Samosata by theorizing that he was a victim of Origen's school.

H.J. Carpenter, Popular Christianity and the Early Theologians, History Series #2, ed. Clarence Lee (Philadelphia: Fortress Press, 1966) p.27 At Antioch between 260 and 270 AD there appears the significant figure of the sophist Malchion, without whose assistance even a body of Origenist bishops could not confute Paul of Samosata.

I do not understand how Paul's Christology is defined (in opposition to Origen's or is it in opposition in the sense of "low" and "high"?) as "low Christology"?

In A New Eusebius, ed. James Stevenson (NY: Macmillan, 1957) p.279 we read:

Paul's opponents (according to C.E. Raven in Apollinarianism) were the forerunners of Apollinarius' heresy for (they held) 'the God-Logos...in (Christ) was what the inner man is in us. Paul would not admit ((to the Origenists at the synods)) that the Logos took the place of the human soul in Christ. Athanasius "On the Councils of Ariminum and Seleucia" (45) said, 'For they who deposed the Samosatene took homoousios in a bodily sense, because Paul had attempted sophistry and said, 'Unless Christ has of man become God, it follows that he is homoousios with the Father; and if so, there are of necesity three ousiai, one of the previous ousia, and the other two from it', and, therefore, guarding against this, they said with good reason, that Christ was not ((in this way)) homoousios.

It is interesting that any credibility could be given to any scholia which might attempt to compare Origen's Christology in any way to that of Paul of Samosata.Gaulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00360140998387272756noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4691107643479417770.post-86693615138471877672012-01-30T12:08:35.112-08:002012-01-30T12:08:35.112-08:00There are ONLY 38 Books of Scripture in the OT. As someone interested in the topic, but outside the religion industry, my largest problem is getting access to the current writings by people in the industry. They are either very expensive or hard to access.

Would it be great if someone set up a web server, perhaps with a forum mechanism, but that is a detail, where a large group of potentially prescreened people could write the thesis/synopsis of as many peer reviewed papers in the industry as possible. Not reviews or opinions, but the thesis statement, and perhaps the arguments of the paper in outline form.

This would then be available to VIEW by everyone, and perhaps COMMENT/DISCUSS (remember it is set up with a forum mechanism) by others (perhaps different than the contributors)

I used to help Dr Robert M. Price for years with his technical stuff. I am now a retired computer worker that has studied early christianity for almost 20+ years now. I believe that such a mechanism would 1) enable seriously interested lay people to stay more informed of the details of what is happening in the industry, 2) would create a community of both seriously interested lay people, and open minded professionals due to the community that would result in such a multi person effort community, and 3) would enable people that are seriously interested in the subject have a place to go to find out the general outlines of the arguments being made in the industry without having to pay money or find some kind of special access to the industry.

As a retired computer industry worker, I would be happy to build such a thing, at no cost, which would operate for less than $20 a month of server and bandwidth, and if you or anyone is interested in the concept, please feel free to contact me by email.

Cheers!
