David Jorgensen: Irenaeus Redactor

In the composition of his opus Adversus Haereses, Irenaeus made use of a number of written sources, both heretical and heresiological. At times his use and redaction of these sources may be detected. The main part of the paper will present evidence that Ireneaus adapted an existing anti-Marcionite treatise for use in his anti-Valentinian polemics in AH, where it is particularly noticeable in Book 3. Then, as Irenaeus seems to announce once or twice (1.27.4, 3.12.12) that he plans to write such an anti-Marcionite treatise, the possible relationship between this lost treatise and the treatise underlying Book 3 will be explored.
